Arriving in Manila on July 16, 2020, the shipment was declared as a brand-new Porsche Cayman sports car in an attempt to avoid the payment of the appropriate duties and taxes. Although similar in car type, the actual shipment was a McLaren 620R super car with a value of PHP 33 million and corresponding duties and taxes of PHP 16,771,688.91 Million.
Port of Manila District Collector Michael Angelo Vargas immediately issued a warrant of seizure and detention on the shipment based on the recommendation of IG-CIIS. Allegedly the consignee Llorin Trading declared duties and taxes amounting to only PHP1.5 million thus preventing the collection of PHP15. million worth of revenues to the government.
The consignee and broker of the shipment are now facing possible charges for violation of Section 1400 in relation to Section 1113 of RA 10863 also known as the Customs Modernization and Tarrif Act (CMTA).
The Port of Manila in coordination with BOC Intelligence Group and all its offices is committed to its mandate of collecting appropriate duties and taxes and prevent the proliferation of improper and or misdeclared imported vehicles into the country.
A check of Llorin Trading's records reveals it usually handles imported vehicles from North America, specifically, Canada, with some of the recent imports on record being a 2020 Porsche 911, a 2020 Ford GT500, and a 2020 Lincoln Navigator shipped between March and June 2020.
What isn't clear is how the BOC determines the value of the vehicle, considering McLaren Manila has yet to launch its dealership in BGC unlike U.S. Customs which use the Kelley Blue Book.
As for the McLaren 620R, it's described as a road-legal version of the McLaren 570S race car which runs in the GT4 European series, using both its aerodynamic hardware and chassis components. It runs a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 that puts out 612hp (620PS) and 620 Nm of torque through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, reportedly putting down 185 kilograms of downforce at 250 kph, and going from 0-100kph in 2.9 seconds and 0-200kph in 8.1 seconds before it tops out at 322kph.. It's also one of only 350 units to be made available to customers. It's also available in one of three McLaren Racing colors--McLaren Orange, Silica White and Onyx Black--with GT4 race livery as standard, although other body colors and bespoke detailing are available through McLaren Special Operations.
In line with the Bureau of Customs' (BOC) commitment to protect the country's borders and collect appropriate duties and taxes, the Port of Manila through the Intelligence Group's Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (IG-CIIS) apprehended yesterday, August 03, a McLaren 620R supercar.
