Toyota Fortuner, Innova Receive 5-Star ASEAN NCAP Rating
Based on the tests, the data obtained from the frontal offset test showed that the Fortuner provided 'Good' protection to both of the adult occupants. Nevertheless, the driver's lower legs showed the risk of injury in the test.
As for the side-impact test, adult occupants in the front seats received a 'Good' rating for their head, torso, and waist.
Similar to the Hilux model, this is the second assessment that ASEAN NCAP performed on the new Toyota Fortuner. The Fortuner's first result assessment was announced in 2016 in which the rating was extended from Toyota Hilux's results, since both vehicles share the same platform along with the Innova.
For the current assessment, ASEAN NCAP has extended the new Toyota Hilux's assessment results to the SUV, which has comparable occupant protection to the tested pickup truck with identical design and similar restraint system for crashworthiness, based on the technical evidences provided by Toyota.
Like the Fortuner, the data from the Innova's frontal offset test showed the vehicle provided 'Good' protection to both the driver and front passenger. Nevertheless, there is a high possibility for the driver's chest and lower legs to sustain an injury in a real-world crash. As for the side impact test, the performance was confirmed with an additional deployment test and it received a 'Good' score.
Like the Hilux and Fortuner before it, this is the second ASEAN NCAP assessment conducted on the Toyota Innova model. The first was performed in 2016 in which the MPV received two ratings; Four-Star for variants that are not fitted with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Five-Star for those that are equipped with ESC and Seat Belt Reminder (SBR) for both frontal occupants. Based on technical evidence provided by Toyota, ASEAN NCAP confirms that the current Innova model has identical structural design and similar crashworthiness restraint system as the one tested in 2016. Thus, for the current assessment, ASEAN NCAP extended the Innova's Offset Deformable Barrier (ODB) score in 2016 to the 2020 model. The new seven- to eight-seater MPV is fitted with three airbags, SBR for both frontal occupants and ESC as standard across all variants while variants offered in certain available markets come standard with seven-airbags.
The new Toyota Innova obtained a total score of 82.69 points in this assessment which makes it eligible to be awarded with 5-Star ASEAN NCAP rating while the new Toyota Fortuner received an overall score of 87.46 points which makes it eligible for the five-Star ASEAN NCAP rating.
